The short answer

The average US residential electricity rate was 17.5¢/kWh in January 2026, up 1.2% from December and up 9.5% from January 2025. North Dakota had the cheapest electricity (10.9¢) and Hawaii the most expensive (39.8¢), while Connecticut saw the biggest monthly increase (+11.9%).
