What your appliances really cost to run

About Applicost

Applicost answers a simple question with real numbers: what does it actually cost to run this appliance where I live?

Why we built it

Most energy calculators use a single national rate and multiply an appliance’s sticker wattage by 24 hours. That makes a refrigerator look three times more expensive than it is and hides the fact that the same space heater can cost several times more to run in one state than another.

Applicost uses the official average residential electricity price for every state from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, refreshed automatically every month, and realistic usage assumptions you can see and change.
