How much electricity does an air fryer use?
Air fryers draw 1,000–1,800W, but they cook faster than an oven and heat a much smaller space.
An air fryer is a small convection oven: a heating element plus a powerful fan in a compact basket. It has a lower wattage than a full oven, heats up almost instantly and usually cooks 20–30% faster, so it uses much less electricity for small meals. The element cycles once the set temperature is reached; we assume it is on about 80% of the time.
Ways to cut the cost
- Skip preheating for most foods — the basket heats in a couple of minutes.
- Cook in single layers so hot air circulates and food finishes faster.
- Use it instead of the big oven for small portions and reheating.
